BIOGRAPHY - PENNY CHAN - CONSISTENTLY INCONSISTENT いつまでも 元気 です
With a flair for creating the unexpected, Penny Chan is a visual artist who paints with acrylic medium and joy at the heart of everything. “Over the years I have enjoyed watching my own children create their tapestries from the threads life has provided. My heart pours with love, from trusting relationships to life’s lessons, my paint and brushes do all the talking now."
Born in the foothills of the Snowy Mountains and raised in regional Australia, Penny has travelled the world spending time in Japan, France, Germany and New Zealand, and carries influences of Poland, Croatia, Italy and the Venetian artisans. The artist is Australian, proud of German and French ancestry, with many good friends in Japan that she considers family. Her Japanese wine-making family (Inada’s of Tenri-city) called her Penny Chan and is where the artist's name originates. The name is playful, eternally youthful and one that brings equal joy.
Penny Chan loves to share her feelings and experiences of all the places she has visited. From the red Australian soil streaming through her fingers to the rainbow colours of the Murano glassworks, lanterns and silks of Kyoto and the bright neon lights of Tokyo. There are dark nights on Norfolk Island, a neon wonderland of the Robot restaurant in Tokyo, the white sands of the Whitsundays and piercing sapphire seas of Okinawa. References are made to the worn cobble stones of Germany’s old Heidelberg which offset with gorgeous floral bouquets hanging from historical buildings and the artist's retreat of Honfleur in Normandy France where the safe harbour is lit up by brilliant sunsets that reflect on the brightly painted buildings.
The artist enjoys a walk in the Australian bush just as much. “It doesn’t matter where you live. A time comes in your life where you stop walking past and you begin to really see what is all around you". Some 35 years ago Penny Chan reflects on wise words from her Japanese grandmother who encouraged her to look to the green and to rest her eyes and really see. It may have taken 35 years to embrace that wisdom however Penny loves what she sees and hopes others will enjoy what they see in all of her creations, not pigeonholed to one particular style. Australian natives, Japanese gardens, lantern festivals, landscapes, abstracts and more are all within the artist's latest pieces.
Penny Chan's works are assigned to a retrospective journey through isolation and transpose memory work to paint on canvas. Each palette is mixed to reflect the mood or the energy she wishes to infiltrate and share with others. "I enjoy commission work as I am given the opportunity to engage with others, to listen and hear their hearts. I then translate it to create artwork that is meaningful, with purpose and leaves a legacy of love and joy.”
Penny Chan recently hit the international market yet remains humbled, never forgetting where it all started and the necessary journey (including the struggles) she had to take to enable her to paint and communicate through visual representation for the interpretation of the viewer.
